Bhubaneswar, March 24: In a major breakthrough for security forces, most-wanted Maoist leader Sukru, a State Committee member, surrendered before Kandhamal Police on Tuesday along with four other Maoists.
According to official sources, Sukru, who had a bounty of ₹55 lakh on his head, laid down arms along with an AK-47 rifle. He was reportedly active in Kandhamal district for a long time and played a key role in Maoist operations in the region.
Police said Sukru had been operating a new outfit under the name “Eighth Company” and was involved in strengthening Maoist activities locally. His surrender comes after sustained efforts and repeated appeals by Odisha Police urging extremists to return to the mainstream.
The surrender of Sukru and his associates is being seen as a significant success in the state’s ongoing anti-Maoist Mission. Authorities reiterated their commitment to making the country Maoist-free, with a target set for March 31.
Further details are awaited.
