Berhampur University Hosts National Conference on Dr. Harekrushna Mahatab’s Legacy

Berhampur, March 21, 2025 – The Department of History at Berhampur University inaugurated a two-day National Conference on March 21-22, 2025, centered on the theme “Dr. Harekrushna Mahatab: A Visionary Leader and His Role in Nation Building.”

The conference was formally inaugurated by Prof. Geetanjali Dash, Vice Chancellor of Berhampur University, who emphasized the importance of studying the legacies of leaders like Dr. Mahatab in shaping modern India and Odisha. Prof. S. K. Tripathy, Chairman of the PG Council, also addressed the gathering, underscoring the relevance of Mahatab’s contributions to India’s development.

The event featured distinguished speakers, including Prof. Chandi Prasad Nanda, Director of the Odisha Research Centre, who served as the Chief Guest. He elaborated on Dr. Mahatab’s visionary leadership and his role in Odisha’s socio-political evolution. Prof. Raj Shekhar Basu, Professor of History at the University of Calcutta, highlighted Mahatab’s significant contributions to India’s National Movement. The keynote address was delivered by Prof. Arjun Rao Kuthadi, President of the South India History Congress, who provided insights into Mahatab’s early life and formative years.

Dr. Sadananda Nayak, Convenor and Head of the Department of History, Berhampur University, introduced the theme of the conference, setting the stage for insightful discussions. Dr. Ramakant Bhuyan, Co-convenor and Assistant Professor, delivered the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all speakers and participants. The smooth execution of the event was coordinated by Dr. Sankarsan Malik, Organizing Secretary and Assistant Professor in the Department of History.

The conference saw active participation from academicians, researchers, and postgraduate students from Berhampur University’s History Department. Additionally, students from Sashi Bhusan Rath College, Chattarpur Science College, and Binayak Acharya College contributed to the discussions.

With its concluding session on March 22, the conference is set to further explore Dr. Harekrushna Mahatab’s impact on nation-building, providing a valuable platform for academic discussions on leadership and governance in post-colonial India.
