Berhampur, 24th June: Serious concerns have been raised over the supply of muddy and allegedly contaminated drinking water by the WATCO Division, Berhampur, with residents claiming that the poor quality of water poses a significant public health risk.
Citizens and activists have urged the Additional Chief Secretary of the Housing & Urban Development Department to intervene immediately and ensure the supply of safe and clean drinking water across the city. They have emphasized that access to safe drinking water is a basic necessity and not a privilege.
Questions have also been raised regarding the functioning of the Dakhinpur Water Treatment Plant (WTP), which supplies water to five zones of the old Berhampur area. It has been alleged that the 20 MLD treatment plant remained effectively non-functional between 2018 and 2021, as both clariflocculators were reportedly out of service. Allegations have further been made that funds allocated for the plant’s maintenance and restoration were misappropriated, though these claims have not been independently verified.
Residents have demanded a thorough inquiry into the functioning of the water treatment infrastructure, expressing concern that similar lapses may be recurring.
The controversy has also reignited criticism of the “Drink From Tap” and 24×7 Water Supply Project, inaugurated by the then Chief Minister on February 29, 2024. Critics allege that, despite more than two years having passed since its launch, the project has failed to deliver its promised benefits and has not ensured a sustainable and reliable drinking water supply for Berhampur.
Citizens have urged the state government to conduct an independent investigation, fix accountability for any irregularities, and take immediate corrective measures to restore public confidence in the city’s drinking water system.
