Berhampur, May 19,2026: A shocking incident of brutal assault on a youth in the middle of the road at Giri Road in Berhampur on Monday evening has triggered widespread concern across the state. A video of the incident, showing two youths allegedly attacking the victim with sticks, has gone viral on social media, sparking outrage among residents.
According to reports, the attack took place in a busy public area during the evening hours. Though the exact reason behind the assault is yet to be confirmed, it is suspected that previous enmity may have led to the violent incident.
The disturbing visuals have left peace-loving residents of Berhampur deeply shaken. Citizens have expressed concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in the city and questioned the effectiveness of police patrolling and preventive policing.
Locals alleged that despite periodic announcements of intensified policing measures, regular foot patrolling, bike patrolling, and “morning patrolling” activities have virtually disappeared from the streets. Residents also claimed that PCR vans, once frequently seen moving through major roads and narrow lanes with sirens, are now rarely visible.
A few days ago, police personnel were reportedly seen conducting foot patrols on important city roads, but the drive lasted only briefly, residents said. Earlier, bike patrol teams with sirens and PCR vehicles regularly monitored crowded and sensitive areas, stopping at suspicious spots for checking and questioning. However, such visible policing has reportedly reduced significantly in recent weeks.
Following a series of law and order incidents in Berhampur, criticism against the police administration has intensified. Citizens alleged that the relaxed policing environment has emboldened anti-social elements, creating fear and insecurity among the public.
The viral Giri Road assault incident has once again raised serious questions over public safety and policing in the Silk City. Police are expected to investigate the incident and identify those involved in the attack.
